At West Northumberland Food Bank, our mission is to provide essential support to individuals and families facing financial hardship. Our team of more than 70 volunteers plays a vital role in making that possible, helping us deliver practical support with compassion, dignity and care.
Volunteer with us
We are currently recruiting volunteers to join both our Helpline Team and Delivery Team. All volunteer roles take place Monday to Friday, with flexible opportunities available depending on your availability.
Helpline Volunteers
Our helpline volunteers are often the first point of contact for people seeking support. The role involves speaking with the people who contact us for support, gathering information, assessing needs and where appropriate sign-posting to further support. As part of this role, volunteers should be:
We're flexible around availability, but we're particularly keen to hear from people who can commit to volunteering regularly.Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm.
- Comfortable speaking with people on the phone
- Compassionate and non-judgemental
- IT literate and confident using computers and online systems
- Able to handle confidential information appropriately

Delivery Volunteers
Our delivery volunteers help ensure food parcels and other essential items reach people across West Northumberland. These roles involve collecting food from supermarkets, packing food parcels and delivering food parcels, often to people who may struggle to access support themselves.
Volunteers should be reliable, friendly and comfortable working as part of a team.
There's no expectation that you'll be available every week. Instead, we're looking for people who are generally able to help from time to time during our operating hours of Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm.
We'll usually be in touch the week before to see if you're available, so you'll have plenty of notice.
Volunteers should be reliable, friendly and comfortable working as part of a team.
